Sunday brunch, anyone..?

Would anyone like to join me for brunch on Sunday the 14th of October after class? I'm off to Mysore for a month on the 20th of October and I may miss some of you on my return as I'm swiftly moving on to teaching yoga on a meditation retreat then doing some traveling in SE Asia most of January 2013. It would be good to hang out before I go.

Love,
SuYen

Photos for the Party

If possible, it would be really great if you could bring along a photo of yourself as a child.  I realize that most of us are not originally from London so probably don't have many of those to hand, but perhaps Mum is savvy with a scanner?  There will be a cork board and some pins to put it up when you come, and you can take it with you when you leave.

A 3 Day Fast

Please join me in a three day fast before the party.  Beginning on 12 September, 1st day raw food, next day fasting, last day raw food.

Party!

The time is coming when I must leave to go down under so please block out Saturday the 15th of September to come to Bodywise and celebrate all the good things in life.  6.00-12.00pm, bring friends and family and a vegetarian dish to share (we've got a lot of good cooks among us!) and dress to impress.  Toby and his band will be providing live music, we will screen Robert's short film Guru, and champagne will flow.  Really hope to see you all there, the next day's a moon day so no worries!

Early Morning Meditation and Pranayama

Our move to Bodywise has given us a beautiful, quite room to continue our early morning meditation and pranayama schedule.  Monthly students are encouraged to drop in to the sessions and no experience in either is necessary.  You are guided breath by breath in the pranayama class and in meditation, unless you already have an established practice, you simply sit and be aware of the breath.

Timings:
M/W Meditation 6-6.30am arrive anytime before 6.20am
Tu/Th Pranayama 6-6.30am arrive at 6am

Hope to see you there.

We're moving!

As the new teacher (Cat who teaches at YP in the evenings) is going to be starting at Yoga Place before I leave for Australia, I have decided to shift premises to a studio nearby so that we may continue our work together. Good fortune, and a wonderful connection through SuYen, has made this transition perfectly natural and smooth.

The studio is called Bodywise.  Some of you may be familiar with its previous incarnation on Roman Road.  They have restructured the management and opened a new studio on Hanbury St. near Brick Lane.  It is going to be great!  Classes will start there on Tuesday 7 August and I will be teaching until at least mid September.  The schedule will be the same as it is now.

I am also happy to announce that SuYen and Toby will be teaching the Mysore program there when I leave.  They have each been assisting the class for a long time and covering for me in my absence. They are both as fully qualified as I can make them and are planning to continue down this path and work toward their authorization by making trips to India to study in Mysore.

For those monthly students who will be making the move with us, the monthly payment will carry over.  Students wishing to stay at YP will be issued refunds for days past 6 August.

New news

After discussing it with Yoga Place's owner, we have decided that after over six years, a new Mysore teacher will take over when I go to Australia.  I am sure that this person will be of a standard in keeping with tradition of strong teaching YP has always had.
I will be returning to London in the spring of 2013 and will keep you all posted as to where I will be teaching.

It is sad to say goodbye to Yoga Place, but, as a Mysore group we have all grown  and learned so much,  I know this good work will continue in each of us.

Vishnu top up

In September of 2008 the Mysore Program at Yoga Place started sponsoring a child through the charity Operation Shanti. His name is Vishnu and at the time he was just 3 years old. I met him just after he was born in 2005, and have gone back many times to say hello to him and all the children at OS.

It takes £20/month to keep Vishnu clothed, fed, housed, and in school. As our numbers in the class fluctuate, so does the amount of money it takes from each of us to accomplish this. At the present time, if the students gave £1/month we would have it covered. We are down by £11 for February, and March is coming up. We normally have a surplus of money for him, but its run a bit dry lately. Why not toss a couple of pounds in the pink box with Vishnu's picture on it? Then next time your path on the pavement gets interrupted by this or that charity, you can say with conviction, "No thank you, I already have a charity I give to."

Operation Shanti was created by a woman called Tracy Kuchicka. She is from San Francisco and was a dedicated Ashtanga practitioner who made her way to India to study with Guruji. While in Mysore she was profoundly moved by the poverty she encountered, especially the woman and children who were living on the street. She then dedicated her life to improving the quality of theirs. I was with her when OS was no more than her filling up her back pack with food and medicine and spending the days cleaning and administering to the needs of the woman and children on the street in Mysore. Now in its 7th year, OS has a residence and grounds and has the children healthy and in school. It has all happened quickly, and all with support from people like us. I watched one person make this difference and I am so happy to do what little I can to support OS.

With Sympathy

On 1 January 2012, Ozge Karabiyik, a fellow London Ashtangi, passed away. She fainted and hit her head during a trip to India, went into a coma, and then died a few days later. It all happened very quickly. She was quite young.

We extend our deepest sympathies to those who knew and loved her.
